Action Provides antimicrobial effect against a wide range of microorganisms.
Indications Surgical scrub; skin cleanser; preoperative skin preparation; skin wound cleanser; hand rinse; oral rinse for gingivitis; an adjunct to scaling and root planning procedures for reduction of pocket depth in adults with periodontitis. Unlabeled use(s): Treatment of acne vulgaris. Amelioration of oral mucositis associated with cytoreductive therapy for bone marrow transplant candidates.
Contraindications Standard considerations.
Route/Dosage
Skin Use
5 ml is applied to skin and worked into lather.
Periodontitis
2.5 mg (1 chip) inserted into periodonted pocket with probing depth ³ 5 mm.
Oral Rinse for Gingivitis
15 ml (1 capful) bid for 30 seconds, morning and evening after toothbrushing. Expectorate after rinsing; do not swallow.
Interactions None well documented.
Lab Test Interferences None well documented.
Adverse Reactions
DERM: Irritation; dermatitis; photosensitivity; sensitization and generalized allergic reactions, especially in genital area. EENT: Deafness; transient parotitis, altered taste perception. OTHER: Staining of teeth and oral surfaces; increased calculus formation; minor irritation and superficial desquamation of oral mucosa.
Precautions
Pregnancy: Category B (oral rinse). Pregnancy category undetermined for skin use. Lactation: Undetermined.

Administration/Storage
- For surgical wash, scrub, or bacteriostatic cleansing: wet hands with warm water and squeeze 5 ml into palm, add water, work up lather, apply lather to area being cleansed and rinse thoroughly.
- For oral rinse: swish in mouth for 30 seconds after toothbrushing and expectorate.
- For surgical hand scrub: wet hands and use nail cleaner under fingernails and to clean cuticles. Wet hands and forearms to elbows with warm water, apply lather, scrub for 3 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Scrub for additional 3 minutes, rinse and dry hands and forearms with sterile towel.
- Keep medication out of ears, eyes and mouth. Serious and permanent eye injury and deafness may occur if used improperly.
- Do not use this medication routinely on wounds involving more than superficial layers of skin.
- Avoid contact with meninges.
- Do not freeze.
- Store at room temperature. (PerioChip should be stored in the refrigerator.)
- Prolonged direct exposure to strong light may cause brownish surface discoloration but does not affect action.
- Shake to disperse color.
Assessment/Interventions
- Obtain patient history, including drug history and any known allergies.
- Monitor for allergic reactions (urticaria, bronchospasm, cough, shortness of breath).
- Monitor skin and mouth for irritation.

Patient/Family Education
- Inform patient that staining of teeth, dental work, tongue and oral tissue may occur. Staining does not adversely affect health and can usually be removed by professional techniques.
- Caution patient that taste perception may be altered during treatment; permanent taste alteration has not been noted.
- Inform patient that oral rinse contains alcohol.
- Instruct patient to avoid having medication come into contact with ears and eyes, which could cause permanent damage.
- Instruct patient not to swallow product but to expectorate after oral rinsing.
- Advise patient to avoid eating 2–3 hr after treatment.
- Advise patients to avoid dental floss at the site of chip insertion for 10 days after placement because flossing might dislodge the chip.
- Instruct patient to notify dentist promptly if chip dislodges.
- Advise patient that although mild to moderate sensitivity is normal during the first week after placement of the chip, notify dentist if pain, swelling, or other problems occur.
